History of Smart Thermostats

Since the correlation between thermostats and energy efficiency were realized, thermostats have evolved to establish their rightful place in history. Traditional thermostats were equipped with a dial or manual keys allowing the user to raise or lower climate control settings in their home. Once the simplicity of this method was realized, the digital thermostat was introduced with programmable settings allowing for more streamlined heating and cooling processes. With a digital thermostat, the user had very limited options to change settings within the control panel. This made it easier to control the indoor energy consumption typically when absent from the home.

Constantly adjusting a thermostat when you are always on the go has become a hassle. As a busy person, either you are home when you do not expect, or gone when you are expected at home. This has been a contributing factor leading to the utilization of smart thermostats. Being connected became any place before the smart thermostat was realized. Designers understood that consumers no longer had predictive lifestyle patterns and work schedules. Creating thermostats with connectivity features soon became a new reality. The connected thermostat would allow any user to change the temperature of their desired environment from any place when connected via the internet.

As time progressed, connected thermostats became ordinal as they provided a one-sided view of heating and cooling settings which limited user convenience. The need for a more complex way to communicate with the climate control system evolved. A thermostat with the ability to provide analytical feedback was developed. These thermostats are collectively known today as the “smart” thermostat. Smart thermostats enable maximum energy saving potential to monitor costs and aid in consumption control. They have the ability to provide real time feedback with an easily understandable interface that streamlines use even for those who are not technically inclined.

Between 2009 and 2014 the need for the available features smart thermostats offered sky rocketed. Consumers became increasingly aware of how their electricity use habits after implementation of a five-star energy program provided evidence that homes with smart thermostats could save a significant amount of money over the course of a calendar year. During that time, well-known companies in the technology sector emerged at the forefront in engineering smart thermostats. They develop their smart models utilizing various sensors, virtual perimeters which analyze the location of your phone in comparison to your thermostat, and complex computations to allow for maximum savings on all climate control systems activity.
